Everyone obsesses about the night before the race — the night anxiety is most likely to fragment. The conflict is treating race eve as sacred versus banking sleep when your nervous system will still cooperate. Night −2 (and −3) usually matter more than a perfect final sleep.

Priority Order

Protect time in bed on nights −3 and −2 first. Keep caffeine earlier than usual if you are sensitive. Keep the room dark/cool and the wind-down boring. Race-eve sleep is a bonus; if it fails, you are not automatically doomed if the prior nights were decent. Broader context: sleep and performance and sleep debt. Pack earplugs and an eye mask if hotel noise is likely — small gear beats a 2 a.m. spiral.

Worked Scenario: 72-Hour Script (Sunday Race)

  • Thu night (−3): lights out ~30–45 min earlier than normal; no late alcohol; same familiar dinner
  • Fri night (−2): highest priority — aim for your full sleep opportunity; short easy shakeout earlier in the day if it helps you unwind
  • Sat: normal carbs, early dinner, lay out gear; screens dim after evening meal
  • Sat night (−1): get in bed on time; if awake >20–30 min, leave bed for a dull reset (book, dim light), then return — do not start doom-scrolling splits
  • Sun: race the plan you wrote when you were calm, not the mood of a fragmented night
Expert Note

One rough race-eve night rarely erases fitness. Catastrophizing about sleep creates a second problem on top of the first. Sleeping pills and new supplements are poor debuts unless already cleared and practiced with your clinician. Travel across time zones needs an earlier shift when possible — a hotel “hack” cannot fully replace circadian adjustment.

Insomnia Decision Rule

If nights −3/−2 were solid and race eve is messy → race your planned conservative-to-goal checkpoints; do not invent a harder open to “make up” for sleep. If the whole week was short sleep and the warm-up feels awful → switch to a finish-focused effort and protect form. Either way, skip the 3 a.m. spreadsheet rewrite.

FAQ

Should I nap the day before?

Only if you already nap well and keep it short (~20–30 min, earlier afternoon). A first-time two-hour nap can wreck night −1.
