Singles means the bar settles, you release or re-grip, breathe, and pull again from a dead stop. Dropping and resetting between every snatch in Isabel is a singles strategy even if the clock never stops.

Primary Variables

  • Load as % of 1RM: Below ~50%, TnG is usually faster if technique holds. Above ~60–65%, singles are usually safer and often faster once bounce quality dies.
  • Reps per set: Sets of 3–7 favor TnG at light loads. Sets of 10–21 require planned breaks even when TnG is available.
  • Movement: Thrusters and hang cleans cycle differently than deadlifts and snatches. Deadlift bounce taxes lumbar endurance; snatch TnG demands precise receiving positions.
  • What follows: Fran thrusters feed into pull-ups — grip and breathing must leave capacity for the bar. Isabel is pure snatches — grip and overhead stability are the only limiters.

Quick Decision Rules

  1. If load ≤45% of 1RM and you can hold positions for the full unbroken set when fresh → default TnG with 1 planned break on large sets (21s).
  2. If load is 45–60% of 1RM → small TnG sets (3–5) or fast singles with 1–2 breath resets. Test both in warm-up.
  3. If load >60% of 1RM or you fail positions under fatigue → singles from rep 1. Chasing TnG here loses more time to missed reps than you gain from bounce.
  4. If grip fails before legs or lungs → shorten sets, chalk on planned breaks, consider alternating hook grip / mixed strategies on deadlifts only (not on cleans/snatches in competition standards that require same grip).

Unbroken is a strategy, not a virtue. An unbroken set of 21 thrusters that leaves you on the floor for 40 seconds before pull-ups often loses to 12-9 with 8-second breaks and immediate pull-up sets of 7-7-7. Measure total workout time, not bar time alone. The fastest cycling athletes break on their terms — not when the bar rips out of their hands.

Fran-Style Cycling: Thrusters Under Pull-Up Fatigue

Fran (21-15-9 thrusters 95/65 + pull-ups) is the canonical cycling test. Thrusters couple a front squat and push press — the bar never rests on the floor between reps in a true cycle, but the "touch" is the bottom of the squat, not the plates. Treat breathing as part of the cycle: inhale or brace at the bottom or lockout consistently; random breath patterns create early shoulder failure.

Pacing Math for Fran Thrusters

Target thruster cycle rate: ~1.5–2.0 seconds per rep when fresh at appropriate load. At 1.8 sec/rep:

  • 21 unbroken ≈ 38 seconds bar time
  • 15 unbroken ≈ 27 seconds
  • 9 unbroken ≈ 16 seconds
  • Total thruster bar time ≈ 81 seconds if unbroken all sets

Realistic intermediate plan: 12-9 on the 21s (12 × 1.9 sec ≈ 23 sec + 8 sec break + 9 × 2.0 sec ≈ 18 sec = ~49 sec for 21s), then 8-7 or unbroken 15s, then unbroken 9s. Add pull-up breaks and transitions. Projected finish often lands 4:30–7:00.

Grip is shared. Large unbroken thruster sets inflate forearm pump before you touch the pull-up bar. Isabel (30 snatches 135/95 for time) rewards either very fast TnG at sub-maximal loads or ruthless singles with short resets. Elite times under 1:30 usually involve TnG or ultra-fast singles. Intermediate athletes often lose time trying to TnG 135/95 when their snatch 1RM is only 155–175 lb (77–87% — far too heavy to cycle).

Load Gate for Isabel

  • TnG candidate: Isabel load ≤50% snatch 1RM and you can bounce 5+ reps in warm-up with locked-out receives
  • Fast singles: Load 50–65% — drop, reset feet, 1 breath, pull. Target 3–4 seconds per rep including reset (30 reps ≈ 90–120 seconds snatch time)
  • Scale: Load >65% or inconsistent receives — drop to 95/65 or 75/55 and train cycling quality

Numeric example: Athlete snatch 1RM = 185 lb. Isabel Rx 135 = 73% → singles or scale. At 95 lb (51%), TnG sets of 5–5–5–5–5–5 with 5-second breaks: 6 × (5 × 2.2 sec + 5 sec break) ≈ 6 × 16 sec = 96 seconds if breaks stay honest — competitive intermediate window. Attempting TnG at 135 with ugly receives often yields 3:00–5:00 with missed reps.

Grip Fatigue: The Hidden Clock

Grip capacity is a finite resource across a session — and across a week. Deadlifts, pull-ups, toes-to-bar, kettlebell swings, and farmer carries all draw from the same pool. Barbell cycling that ignores grip math produces early failures that look like "conditioning" problems.

Practical Grip Rules

  • Hook grip for cleans and snatches in metcons when possible — reduces finger flexor demand vs false grip / regular grip at the same load.
  • Chalk on planned breaks only. Mid-set chalking after unexpected failure costs 8–15 seconds and often repeats. Schedule chalk at known break points (after rep 12, after station changes).
  • Open the hands between stations. Shake out 3–5 seconds during transitions in chippers; clenched fists between movements keep forearm pump elevated.

Grip fatigue pacing example: 50 deadlifts at 185/125 in a chipper. Unbroken 50 at that load for most athletes is fantasy under fatigue. Plan 10-10-10-10-10 with 8–12 second stands and hands open. At 2.0 sec/rep + breaks: 5 × (20 sec work + 10 sec rest) = 150 seconds vs a blow-up that turns into singles with 20-second rests from rep 25 onward (often 4–5+ minutes).

Expert Note

Wrist-based HR monitors are nearly useless for distinguishing grip-limited vs engine-limited failure — both spike HR. Use a simple field test: if you can talk in short phrases and your legs feel fine but the bar slips, it is grip. If you cannot speak and thighs are burning, it is systemic. Train the actual limiter. Grip-specific work (dead hangs 3 × 20–40 sec, farmer carries) 2× weekly improves cycling more than extra Fran attempts when grip is the failure mode.

When to Break Sets: Ahead of Failure

The rule: break 1–2 reps before technical failure, not at failure. Technical failure signs — elbows dropping on thrusters, early arm bend on cleans, rounded lumbar on deadlift TnG, forward receiving position on snatches — mean the next rep is expensive.

Break Prescriptions by Set Size

  • Sets of 21: Default 12-9 or 8-7-6 for intermediates; unbroken only if warm-up set of 15 felt easy at workout pace
  • Sets of 15: Unbroken or 8-7; avoid 5-5-5 unless load is heavy — extra breaks add transition tax
  • Sets of 9–10: Prefer unbroken; if not, 5-4 or 5-5
  • Descending ladders (21-15-9): Break more early, less late. Early breaks buy cleaner late sets when HR is highest

Movement-Specific Cycling Notes

Thrusters

Drive through full hip extension into the press — do not pause in the squat rack position unless you are deliberately resting the bar on the shoulders for a breath. Soft lockouts accumulate no-reps and shoulder fatigue. Cycle rate target 1.5–2.0 sec/rep at Fran loads.

Power Cleans / Squat Cleans

TnG power cleans work well at ≤50% 1RM. Re-grip on the hip loop if fingers loosen — do not catch with a false sense of security. For squat cleans in metcons, bounce timing from the floor must stay flat-backed; when lumbar rounds, switch to singles immediately.

Deadlifts

TnG deadlifts are efficient but neurologically and structurally expensive. Cap TnG sets at 5–10 in metcons unless loads are very light (≤40% 1RM). Mixed grip mid-workout can save a chipper but trains asymmetry — use sparingly. Touch-and-go that turns into bounce-off-the-floor with locked knees is a missed position, not a cycle.

Shoulder-to-Overhead / Push Press

Cycling depends on dip-drive timing. When the dip gets shallow under fatigue, break. Push jerk may be more efficient at heavier loads but requires reliable footwork under fatigue — do not introduce a new jerk style mid-benchmark.

Wearables: What to Track for Cycling Progress

Average HR on Fran or Isabel is a blunt instrument — the session is too short and spiky. Better metrics:

  • Split times: Time at end of 21s, end of 15s, finish. Shrink the gap between first and last set over weeks.
  • Break count: Log planned vs actual breaks. Progress = fewer unplanned breaks at the same load.
  • Rep timing: Film a set monthly; count seconds for 10 thrusters. Aim to hold ≤2.0 sec/rep deeper into fatigue.
  • Session RPE + next-day readiness: Cycling practice should not leave you unable to hang from a bar the next day. If grip DOMS destroys the rest of the week, cut TnG volume 30%.

No. TnG is faster only when positions stay crisp and rest between small sets stays under ~12 seconds. How should I break 30 Isabel snatches?

Why do my thrusters fall apart after pull-ups in Fran?
